Comcast Loses 144,000 Broadband Customers as Peacock Earnings Improve
Comcast lost 144,000 US residential broadband customers in the third quarter, more than analysts expected, as competition weighed on its core internet business. The company reported the results on Thursday, 22 October.
Reuters said analysts polled by FactSet had expected 116,800 customer losses. Comcast lost 91,000 broadband customers in the same period last year.
Domestic broadband revenue fell 4.7% to $6.24 billion, according to the company's results. Wireless was stronger: Comcast added 368,000 lines, taking its total to about 10.6 million.
Peacock generated $261 million in adjusted EBITDA, compared with a $217 million loss a year earlier. This company-defined earnings measure is not the same as net profit. The streaming service's paid subscribers rose 17% to 48 million.
Adjusted earnings per share were $1.07, above the 98 cents analysts expected, Reuters reported. Theme-park revenue fell 4.4% to $2.60 billion.
The figures show the contrasting pressures on Comcast: a shrinking broadband customer base alongside growth in wireless and improving streaming earnings.
