Japan's Exports Rise 16.7% as Chip Demand Supports Trade

Japan's export value rose 16.7% in September from a year earlier, government figures released on 21 October showed, with semiconductor demand helping sustain overseas sales.

It was the thirteenth consecutive month of year-on-year growth, but growth slowed from August's 19.3% and missed the 20.1% rise expected in a Reuters poll.

Shipments to the United States increased 22.9% by value, while exports to China rose 8.6%. Reuters said investment in artificial intelligence continued to support demand for Japanese semiconductors and related equipment.

The headline increase should not be confused with a similar surge in the quantity shipped. The Ministry of Finance's export volume index rose 1.9% from a year earlier, a much smaller gain than the value measure.

Imports increased 18.9% by value. Japan recorded a trade deficit of 536.6 billion yen, narrower than August's roughly 1.1 trillion yen gap but wider than the 181 billion yen deficit forecast in the Reuters poll.

The provisional, unadjusted figures point to continued support from overseas demand, though the slower pace of export growth and persistent goods deficit leave a mixed picture.
