US Presses France and Germany to Release Emergency Diesel Stocks

Washington is pressing France and Germany to tap emergency diesel reserves, with a possible US export ban hanging over the talks. EU governments discussed a French response on Friday, Reuters reported.

France proposed releasing 50 million barrels of European diesel alongside 50 million barrels of crude oil from International Energy Agency members, according to sources. This is a proposal, not an approved release.

Reuters reported a US demand for 100 million barrels of diesel within 20 days. EU countries also discussed requiring a US commitment against a unilateral export ban as a condition of any agreement.

Europe must weigh immediate price relief against preserving reserves for further disruption. Its growing reliance on US diesel makes the outcome significant as Russian export restrictions and the Iran war constrain supply.

No final European reserve-release agreement or enacted US diesel export ban was confirmed in the report.
