Vietnam Joins FTSE Emerging Markets in Milestone for Global Investors

Vietnam entered FTSE Russell’s secondary emerging-market category on 21 September 2026, with eligible shares beginning their inclusion in its global equity indices after years on the watchlist for an upgrade.

For Vietnam, the change widens access to international portfolios that follow those benchmarks. It recognises reforms designed to make the market easier for overseas institutions to trade.

Reuters reported that FTSE Russell estimates the upgrade could draw up to US$6 billion into the country. That is a potential inflow, not a sum already invested or a guaranteed commitment.

The transition is deliberately gradual. FTSE’s implementation plan spreads inclusion across four stages, starting this month and finishing in September 2027. The provider will assess index trackers’ ability to follow each stage before moving to the next.

Obstacles remain. Reuters highlighted foreign ownership limits and restrictions on the amount of stock freely available for trading at some companies.

The milestone therefore opens a wider route to foreign capital, but the pace of investment will matter as much as the headline upgrade.
